Mateo: Identity Written in Pattern and Form

Updated: March 23 2026

Discover the work of Mateo, a contemporary artist whose painted rugs, murals, and ceramics explore identity, memory, and cultural heritage through intricate patterns and striking portraiture.

In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art, new voices emerge that bridge cultures, histories, and visual languages. At EDEN, we are pleased to introduce Mateo, a contemporary artist whose work unfolds at the intersection of urban expression and ancestral craft traditions.

Born in France and currently based in Montreal, Mateo has developed a distinctive artistic practice that brings together the visual intensity of street art with the intricate symbolism of traditional decorative arts. His works span painted rugs, ceramics, fabrics, and murals, exploring identity, memory, and cultural inheritance through richly layered compositions. At the heart of his practice lies what he calls the “inner garden,” an emotional and symbolic landscape where personal history, ancestral motifs, and organic forms grow through the human figure.

A Language Between Street and Tradition

Mateo’s artistic journey began in France, where he completed a Master’s degree in Fine Arts in Toulouse. From early on, he was drawn to the visual language of urban culture. Murals became his canvas, and the streets his first gallery. Over the past two decades, his work has expanded across continents through mural projects, residencies, and exhibitions throughout Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.

While rooted in street art, Mateo’s visual language soon evolved beyond the conventions of graffiti. His work began to incorporate ornamental structures inspired by ancient decorative traditions. These patterns echo the visual histories of textile cultures across the world. These influences gradually shaped one of the most recognizable elements of his practice, his signature painted rugs.

The Painted Rug

Mateo’s painted rugs have become central to his artistic identity. These works feature feminine portraits layered with elaborate patterns derived from ancestral textile traditions. Rather than treating the rug as a purely decorative object, Mateo approaches it as a living cultural archive.

Textiles, historically crafted and preserved by women across generations, carry stories of place, family, and cultural continuity. Mateo honors this legacy by positioning the rug as both a symbolic and emotional surface. Within these works, portraiture becomes intertwined with ornamentation. Faces emerge from fields of pattern that evoke heritage, identity, and collective memory.

Mapping the Inner Garden

At the core of Mateo’s practice lies the concept of the inner garden, a metaphorical space where identity and memory take visual form. Organic motifs, including floral structures, branching lines, and ornamental patterns, appear to grow directly from the subject’s skin. This suggests that personal and cultural histories are inseparable from the body itself.

Drawing inspiration from traditional carpet structures, Mateo often organizes his compositions around the central medallion, a feature commonly found in historic rugs. In his work, this medallion becomes a symbolic source of life or origin that guides the visual rhythm of the composition. The surrounding patterns function almost like an emotional cartography, mapping layers of cultural inheritance and inner experience.

Through this approach, Mateo moves beyond surface representation. His portraits do not simply depict individuals. They reveal internal narratives shaped by memory, ancestry, and emotion.

A Contemporary Vision of Cultural Memory

Working across mediums including carpets, ceramics, fabrics, and monumental murals, Mateo continues to expand the dialogue between street culture and traditional craftsmanship. His work connects contemporary urban expression with visual traditions that span centuries, demonstrating how heritage can remain alive within modern artistic practice.

Today, Mateo exhibits internationally, with works held in significant collections around the world. As he joins the EDEN roster, his work brings a new perspective to the gallery’s global program. His practice celebrates cultural dialogue, personal storytelling, and the enduring power of ornament as a language of identity.

Through Mateo’s art, viewers are invited to enter the inner garden, a space where patterns become memories, portraits become stories, and cultural roots continue to grow into the present.
