Paper Sculpting Definition

Paper sculpting is defined as artwork created by combining or shaping different paper types. It is a form of art in which a sculptor creates a sculpture from paper. These sculptures can be life-sized or much smaller and usually take the form of human figures.

What is Paper Sculpting called?

Paper sculpting is a technique that combines paper cutting and sculpture. The technique is also known as Paper Engineering or Paper Art. Paper Sculpting is also called Origami in Asian cultures and was first developed in Japan by the mathematician and engineer Akira Yoshizawa, in the late 1800s.

Paper Sculpting was first known as Origami in the 17th century, but it's now more widely known as Paper Sculpting. This art form is made out of paper, and it involves folding a sheet of paper into different shapes and patterns, usually with some sort of design or pattern on one side.

In this section, we will be looking at some of the most popular techniques that are used to create paper sculptures.

Fringing

The fringing technique uses cuts across a piece of paper, the size and shape depend upon what purpose it will serve. Layers and roll fringe pieces to add interest.

Curling

The technique of curling in Paper Sculpture is a way to create a three-dimensional effect. First, the artist will fold the paper and then curl it around itself, creating loops and spirals. This creates an illusion of depth and movement on the flat surface.

Pleating

Pleating is the process of creating folds in paper to form a series of ridges on one side of the paper. It is typically done with thin sheets of paper that are then layered on top of each other to create intricate shapes and patterns.

Chain

The chain technique is widespread and common in Paper Sculpture. The first step to making a chain is to take one sheet of paper and fold it in half lengthwise. Then, fold the other end of the paper over the first end to form a loop. Take one more sheet of paper and put it over the first loop, then flip it around so that the two ends overlap like an X.

Interlocking

The interlocking technique in Paper Sculpture is one of the most popular techniques in this art form.

This technique uses two sheets of paper, one to mold and shapes the sculpture, and another to use as a base. The paper sculptor starts by folding the top sheet over the bottom sheet so that they are aligned with each other at their edges, but not at their centers. The sculptor then folds the two sheets together at their centers so that they are aligned with each other on both sides.
