Isleworth Mona Lisa: Turin's Art Mystery

Updated: December 19 2023

The art world is currently enthralled by a fascinating mystery surrounding a painting on display in a gallery in Turin. This painting, known as the "Isleworth Mona Lisa," is stirring significant debate among art experts and enthusiasts alike. The question at the heart of this controversy is whether this painting could be an early draft of Leonardo da Vinci's renowned "Mona Lisa."

This version of the Mona Lisa, promoted by a dedicated foundation, differs notably from the iconic version housed in the Louvre. The Isleworth painting portrays a younger woman framed by columns and set against an unfinished landscape. It's thought to have been painted around 1503, which would make it about a decade older than the more famous version.

The foundation supporting the Isleworth Mona Lisa points to various pieces of evidence in its favor. They cite historical notes suggesting Leonardo was working on a portrait of the same subject at the time and an estate inventory that could potentially reference this version of the painting. However, the debate intensifies due to discrepancies such as the medium of the painting (canvas instead of wood) and the lack of Leonardo's signature sfumato technique.

The authenticity of the Isleworth Mona Lisa is a complex issue involving intricate aspects of art history, stylistic analysis, and scientific testing. Some experts argue that the painting lacks the soul and style characteristic of Leonardo's works, while others believe that scientific analyses suggest the same artist painted both versions.

This controversy underscores the subjective nature of art authentication, a process fraught with complexity and emotional response. As the painting is displayed in Turin, it not only draws crowds but also invites a deeper reflection on the mysteries of art history. Whether an early work by Leonardo or a masterful imitation, the Isleworth Mona Lisa continues to captivate and intrigue, highlighting the enduring fascination with one of history's greatest artists and his most famous work.
