Eden Gallery Artists Pay Tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat

 

Basquiat was an American artist who gained widespread recognition in the 1980s for his unique fusion of street art, graffiti, and fine art. Vivid colors, striking imagery, and powerful social commentary characterize his paintings. He often incorporated text, symbols, and cultural references into his work, exploring themes of race, identity, and politics. Much like Basquiat, Eden Gallery artist Eduardo Kobra is also one of the most recognized street artists in the world whose art is heavily rooted in social commentary. Kobra even has a painting called 'Club 27 - Jimi Hendrix and Jean-Michel Basquiat,' which shows the faces of both Basquiat and Hendrix. They are paired together since they both were artists who mastered their craft and stood for social justice, both tragically dying an untimely death at 27 years old. Eduardo Kobra is following in the footsteps of the iconic Basquiat by sending powerful messages about justice, equality, and social change with his graffiti and art.

 

 

One of the things that Basquiat was known for was his expressive and often abstract graffiti or street art, often serving as cultural commentary. In his painting called 'Basquiat on the Wall II,' Accardi, similar to Jisbar, uses artwork from Jean Michel Basquiat as the backdrop for his art. In this one, he depicts his signature ostrich, which he often paints as symbols of freedom, playfulness, and nobility.

 

 

As opposed to using Basquiat's art as a backdrop, two Eden Gallery artists working as a duo, known as F&G (Fratz & Gio), use Jean Michel's symbols and drawings in other creative ways, and much like in Basquiat's work, they also send cultural and political messages. In their sculpture called 'Pitchou Cute 45 "Brooklyn" (Tribute to JM Basquiat),' they honor Basquiat by putting his symbolism and drawings all over the sculpture. This sculpture's message is open for interpretation, as a cute dog is holding a gun with Basquiat's satirical drawings all over it.

 

 

As illustrated, many contemporary artists use Jean Michel Basquiat's drawings and symbolism to honor the artist and carry on his traditions. His unique style and subject matter continue to inspire many artists who use his aesthetic and motifs to create reinterpretations.
