Eden Gallery Artists' Homage to Takashi Murakami

Updated: May 08 2023

Renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is famous for blending many different styles in art that are typically known as contradictory such as traditional Japanese art techniques with western influences and pop culture. As a celebrated contemporary artist, so many up and coming artists of today use Takashi’s style and are influenced by his bold and pioneering methodologies. See how Eden Gallery artists PLUM, F&G, and Angelo Accardi use Takashi Murakami’s practices and patterns in their artwork.

Murakami's distinctive style combines long-established Japanese art with contemporary pop culture imagery like anime and manga. He has also become a leading figure in the Superflat movement, which merges traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern culture. Murakami's signature smiling flower pattern, recognized worldwide in art, fashion, and wallpaper appears childlike. Still, it represents the collective suppressed trauma experienced by many Japanese people after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

PLUM, who is known for his intricate compositions incorporating feathers, pays tribute to Murakami in his artwork titled "Murakami (Kawaii)". The artwork features a feather formation portraying Takashi's iconic smiling flower with multicolored feathers acting as leaves. Similarly, F&G, famous for their satirical motifs and comics, honor Murakami in their sculpture "Art 45 – Daisy Blue Tribute to Murakami," where they have painted Takashi's smiling flowers all over the word "ART". F&G employ simplicity and a neat appearance, much like Murakami, and use symbols and comic references to infuse innocent and joyful symbolism with deeper meaning.

Lastly, in Accardi's painting titled "Fuck in the Corner," the viewer is presented with a complex composition that showcases the artist's signature style. In the background, Murakami's smiling flowers are displayed as a work of art, blending seamlessly with the rest of the chaotic setting. Alongside the flowers, we see the famous Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe, symbolizing modern society and its values. The juxtaposition of these seemingly unrelated elements creates a sense of disorientation and provokes the viewer to question their perception of reality. Through his use of clashing characters and settings, Accardi encourages the viewer to look beyond the surface and delve deeper into the meanings behind his artwork.

Takashi Murakami's innovative approach to art has inspired a generation of artists like PLUM, F&G, and Angelo Accardi, who create playful and provocative art that challenges traditional boundaries. To see more groundbreaking artworks, visit the Eden Gallery website or a local gallery near you.
