Art Inspiration

Updated: May 08 2023

Inspired by the works of the masters, many artists that work at the forefront of the industry often pay homage to the old and historic. While contemporary art reflects our time, it is shaped by the past, putting a modern twist on classical subjects and bridging the often unassailable gap between modernity and history. Eden Gallery houses a diverse array of artworks and collections illustrated by Eden's fine artists, yet many have drawn inspiration for their artwork from those who came before them.

An introspective Italian artist, Angelo Accardi draws immense inspiration from the history of art. The artist's vibrant paintings strike the public's emotions at each glance and require good thought to uncover the heart of the matter. His paintings of exquisite living rooms are filled with work from past artists, such as Klimt, Magritte, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Keith Haring, colorful ostriches, and familiar pop culture figures. Accardi's mixed media painting titled "The New Son of Man" is an excellent site that pays tribute to the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte's best-known artwork, "The Son of Man." Although the work of René Magritte influenced Accardi, he added his unique style to the painting, creating an extraordinary artwork.

René Magritte created some of the most timeless, recognizable, and world-renowned images of the 20th century. In addition, Magritte's approachable painting style and explicit imagery have influenced many aspects of the Pop Art movement, leaving a lasting influence on the many artists who followed in his footsteps. Through Dorit Levinstein's wall sculpture titled "Magritte," she pays a direct tribute to the influential work of Magritte. Levinstein's graceful and elegant sculpture outlines the iconic work of Magritte, "The Son of Man," through her universe of forms, figures, and colors. Although an artwork from the past inspired her sculpture, her work is the outcome of a creative and sophisticated process, resulting in a monumental sculpture that can brighten any room.

A true artist-scientist archetype, Jonty Hurwitz also draws insight from an artist of the past. One of his most famous sculptures, titled "Third Kiss," includes a cylinder-shaped object, yet when you look into the reflection of the 3D shape, the viewer can see an angel and a woman sharing a kiss. This work of art was inspired by a beautiful marble sculpture done several hundred years ago called "Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss," created by the Italian artist Antonio Canova. While "Third Kiss" is based on an iconic historical sculpture, it also represents the love story between Hurwitz and his wife, allowing Canova to shape his creation while incorporating his innovative perspective.
