5 Things You Didn't Know About Dorit Levinstein

Updated: May 02 2024

Known worldwide for her masterful artworks, Dorit Levinstein creates colorful sculptures that twist and turn in space, taking on shapes such as dancing lovers, flowers, and animals. Her intricate designs are painted with a mix of bold colors that clash to create a visually stunning and joyful experience. Not only is she an incredibly talented artist whose sculptures are sold and displayed globally, but she is also a fascinating person who exudes depth and passion in everything she does. Her way of living is truly inspiring, so here are five fascinating facts about Dorit Levinstein that you may not have known.

1. Self-healing art.

Dorit has a deep need to express herself through art. She says that even without being consciously aware of it, the stuff she creates reflects what she feels inside and what she is always thinking about. She desires to share her internal thoughts and feelings through her sculptures in such a way that causes people to stop and think when looking at her art. She believes that her art manifests specific experiences that cannot be expressed in words. As far as what subjects she chooses to focus on, Dorit, in her own words, explains, "I occupy myself with what interests/intrigues/disturbs me. Feelings, emotions, and questions that arise within me are of much greater personal interest. I often examine all kinds of facts or clichés."

2. Creation is the purpose of life.

Levinstein explains that there is no distinction between her personal life and her work, as both occupy her thoughts and time. She brings her real-life experiences and emotions into the studio for internal processing, emphasizing the importance of authenticity. Dorit's artistic subjects seem to come from an indistinct source but act as a muse that people often refer to. Dorit feels she is a conduit for knowledge that originates from an unknown place, as if the work is destined to be created. She says, "I feel like a pipe that receives knowledge from somewhere unknown as if it had to happen. The work had to be born."

3. Addiction to color.

This fact is almost no surprise, as all of Dorit's sculptures are boldly colorful and patterned so that even the plainest of rooms can be brightened with depth and dimension from any of Dorit's sculptures. Levinstein is highly attuned to the visual world around her and finds joy and inspiration in her surroundings' rich tapestry of colors. Her use of color goes hand in hand with the figures she portrays. The dancing people, the beautifully feathered creatures, the flowers, and her 'Love' sculptures evoke the most profound sense of joy and light-heartedness in precisely the same fashion as her colorful designs. Her sense of adventure and passion comes out in her colorful sculptures. Dorit explains, "Color, for me, is a type of addiction. A world where I find surprises within surprises, much like arriving in a new country and experiencing a party with people I've never met before."

4. Contemporary Japanese art.

Dorit holds a deep admiration for the work of several contemporary artists from Japan, including Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, for their exceptional attention to tradition, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. She has a fondness for Japan and considers it her favorite place to visit. Dorit often fantasizes about collaborating with Japanese artists to create art in Japan and dreams of living there for a few months.

5. Creating art, a meditative state.

Dorit poignantly describes this trance-like state that she enters while working, saying, "when I work, nothing else matters. I enter into an intense concentration between myself and myself. In fact, my eyes are "closed to the environment." I work with another part of my brain. I see only thoughts that run past. I argue with myself about why something has been done one way or another. Sometimes I feel that I need to be corrected and still don't stop; I also have to carry out the mistake. It works in the same way that life does. Something may be a mistake, and yet you must experience it. These hours of creation are the purpose of my life. The world does not exist outside of what I create, so I ignore other images."

Through Dorit Levinstein's vibrant and colorful sculptures, she invites viewers to experience the world in a new and exciting way. Her dedication to her craft is evident in every work she creates, and her enthusiasm is infectious. By bringing her unique vision to life in such a dynamic and joyful way, Dorit reminds us of art's transformative power. She is a true inspiration to anyone who aspires to pursue their passion with authenticity and energy.
